The best Ghost themes for 2026: how to choose, by type of site

Start from your site, not from a ranking: what any Ghost theme should do in 2026, then the best fit for each kind of site.

SamaDesign Ghost themes fanned out

Every “best Ghost themes” list ranks themes against each other. That is not very useful: the best theme for a culture magazine is a poor choice for a photographer. This guide starts from your site instead — first what any good Ghost theme should do in 2026, then the best fit for each kind of site.

What every Ghost theme should do in 2026

  1. Ghost 6 ready. It passes GScan, Ghost’s official theme validator, without errors. Ask the seller, or run it yourself on gscan.ghost.org.
  2. Native features only. The cover story comes from the Featured checkbox, curated sections from internal tags (#picks), social links from Ghost’s own settings. No custom fields that vanish when you switch theme.
  3. Every section can be switched off. Each homepage block has a switch in Design & branding, and empty blocks hide themselves.
  4. Members and newsletter built in. A sign-up form where it makes sense, hidden for readers who are already members.
  5. Light and dark. In 2026 readers expect a dark mode that follows their system, not just a dark theme.
  6. Fast without plugins. Vanilla CSS and JavaScript, images in responsive sizes, no tracking scripts.

The best fit for each type of site

  • Lifestyle blog that publishes often → Gazette: story slider, editor’s picks, quote of the week. Demo.
  • Personal blog & newsletter → Salvia: a warm opening that introduces you and invites readers to subscribe. Demo.
  • Luxury, fashion, travel → Aurelia: night and champagne gold, glass and film grain. Demo.
  • Culture & events magazine → Vesper: newspaper masthead, top five, agenda with big dates. Demo.
  • Editorial magazine → Cobalt: a split screen whose left half follows the story you read. Demo.
  • Photographers & photo journals → Evergreen: full-bleed opening photo and a journal along a timeline. Demo.
  • Design, architecture, a strong voice → Kontur: Swiss-style grid, big type, your posts as posters or a sideways pan. Demo.
  • Creative studios & portfolios → Atelier: a tilted wall of work that drifts on its own, projects that lean as you scroll. Demo.
  • Memberships & paid newsletters → Giornale: a full-screen slider of featured stories, a mega menu and your tiers on the homepage. Demo.

And if you just want a simple blog?

Ghost’s free default theme, Source, is a good start: clean, maintained by the Ghost team, with a few layout options. A premium theme is worth it when you want a homepage with a character of its own, curated sections and a design your readers remember.
